HENRY DUNHAM, FORMER POSTMASTER IN ERIE, IS DEAD

Resident of Grant Township for Many Years, Retiring From the Farm to Move to Stark (Kansas) a Few Years Ago

Henry E. Dunham, for many years one of Grant township's widely known farmers and stockmen, and long active in Democratic politics in his home county, died unexpectedly at his home in Stark, Friday afternoon about 3:00 p.m. from a heart attack.  While he had not been in good health for a number of years, his condition was not thought to be serious and his sudden death came as a great shock to his family and many friends.  Several years ago he and Mrs. Dunham retired from their Grant township farm and moved to Stark to make their home.

He had been employed at the Ordnance Plant at Parsons (Kansas) until recently, quitting his job about a week before his death due to impaired health.  He made a business trip to several points in the county a day or so prior to his death, but Friday he complained of feeling ill and succumbed to an attack of heart trouble about 3 o'clock that afternoon.

Mr. Dunham served as postmaster in Erie in 1936-1937.  He was 66 years of age and had lived in Grant township since 1884, coming there with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Leonidas (Mary) Dunham, from Missouri.  With the exception of about four years he spent in the Indian Territory, now the state of Oklahoma, Mr. Dunham had spent his entire life in Neosho County.  He held the office of Democratic precinct committeeman in his township for a time and always maintained an active interest in politics.  He was also an active member of the Methodist church.

The deceased was born in Stockton, Missouri, April 4, 1876 and was married on December 25, 1900 to Lelia Magner.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Beulah (Rolla) Miller, Walnut, four sons; Hollis of Erie, Odin of Grant township, Howard of Lawrence, and Max of Stark; three sisters, Mrs. Hallie Wright, Stark; Mrs. Maggie Purdy, Kansas City; and Mrs. Mattie Hewitt, Clinton, Missouri; and two brothers; Racy Dunham of Inglewood, California and Fred Dunham of Hutchinson, Kansas.  He also leaves eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Stark Methodist church, Rev. Alden Pitts, assisted by Rev. J.W. Hadley of the Erie Federated church, officiating and burial was made in the Savonburg Cemetery.

The four sons of the deceased acted as pallbearers.  The Heaton Funeral Home was in charge.

Lelia Margaret (Magner) Dunham

Today is March 1, 2017 and the three previous posts on my Blog has listed Lelia, her husband, Henry Evans Dunham and seven of their eight children.

I am unable to locate the eighth child, a son of Lelia and Henry Dunham.

There is a Harold R. Dunham listed on (FAG) Find-a-Grave at the Mount Moriah Cemetery in Stark, Kansas - Neosho County.

However the 1905 Kansas State Census and 1910 US Census lists Harold's parents as Racy and Ethel Dunham.  I believe Racy or Rason is one of Henry Dunham's brothers.

I will continue to research the missing child, should I find him I will add him to my Blog.

Albert's Nickname:  Max

I am looking for Albert Maxey Van Cleave's obituary, stay tuned...

Lanville Milton Magner

After reading Cora (Magner) Van Cleave's obituary, I must admit that it was the 1st time I had heard that Lanville and Anna Magner family moved from Orleans, Indiana to Vilas, Kansas before living in Galesburg.

Lanville Magner's obituary posted July 5, 2016 states "He moved with his family to Kansas in June 1883...".  His wife, Anna's obituary posted July 1, 2016 says "She moved with her husband from Indiana to Kansas in 1833."  I am pretty sure that is a typo and the newspaper meant 1883.  The parents did not mention Vilas so I looked back at the obituaries I've posted for their children.

Their son, John Edward Magner obituary posted August 30, 3016 reads "He moved to Galesburg, Kansas in 1883 and later to Parsons..."

Daughter, Minnie Florence Rambo obituary posted December 14, 2016 states "Mrs. Rambo was born August 24, 1868 at Orleans, Indiana and at the age of 14 (1882) came to the Galesburg area with her parents."

Son, Samuel Brown Magner obituary posted July 24, 2016 says "At the age of 12 years he moved with his parents to Kansas, settling on a farm north of Galesburg."

Cora Luella Van Cleave obituary posted January 28, 2017 reads "At an early age, she moved to Vilas with her parents.  The family moved to Galesburg after living briefly at Vilas."

Leila Margaret Dunham, I plan to post her obituary in the next two weeks, but it reads "The family moved to Kansas, settling near Chanute, when she was four years old.  Later they moved to Galesburg."

I was born in Chanute and grew up in Topeka.  Yes, we visited our grandparents, Albert & Jennie (Gager) Magner many-many times in Galesburg, but never passed through this town.  So I googled it and learned that Vilas is a village in Colfax Township.  It was established in 1857 when the Osage Indians were a threat.  In 1874 grasshoppers came in August and ate everything.  By 1886 the building of the railroad was a boom for the community and shortly after, the town was able to build a one-room schoolhouse.  Well I learned something today and wanted to share with you : - )

Oh, Kansas became a state on this day, January 29, 1861.
