Mr. Magner's Death Sudden

L.M. Magner who has been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. H. C. Rambo, living four miles south of Galesburg, received a sudden summons to the Mysterious realm Saturday forenoon, August 22 at 10 o'clock says the Galesburg correspondent of the Erie Record.

Mr. Magner was stricken about ten days ago with neuralgia of the heart but rallied and was under the physician's care until Tuesday, when he was dismissed.  Mr. Magner was feeling fairly well Saturday morning and was sitting on the door step when he fell forward and as he fell he called and his daughter and Mr. Rambo came to his assistance and with the help of neighbors carried him into the house, where he expired in a few minutes.

Lanville M. Magner was born near Orleans, Orange County, Indiana on February 11, 1837 and died Saturday morning, August 22, 1908.  He was married to Anna M. Taggart December 22, 1859 and to this union was born nine children, five girls and four boys, four children having preceded him to the better land.

He moved with his family to Kansas in June 1883, where he had since resided.  He united with the Presbyterian Church in early manhood.  He had fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  His wife, Anna died just eleven months ago to the day.  He leaves two sons and three daughters and a large circle of friends to mourn his death.

Father Magner was well and favorably known in Neosho County, as well as in Wilson County, where he resided before moving to Galesburg.  He engaged in the general merchandise business in Galesburg for a few years, but again returned to the farm, which he sold later and for the past few years has made his home with his children in this vicinity.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Werner at the ME (Methodist Episcopal) Church Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock after which the remains were laid to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery in Galesburg, Kansas.

Edward Magner Son, William Henry Magner Obituary

The Progress-Examiner, Orleans, Indiana

Thursday, September 24, 1914

William Henry Magner

William Henry, the fifth of a family, seven children of Edward and Jane Magner was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, March the 9th of 1831.

He came with his parents to Indiana, when but two and a half years of age.  He is the last of his family to cross the boundary line between this and the other life, as his good wife, now widowed, is the only one of her family, left on this side.

He was married to Margaret Taggart, November 7, 1850.  To this union were born ten children; six sons and four daughters: Edward B., aged fourteen, passed into the other world, December 13, 1867; and Charles W., exchanged this life for the one beyond, October 4, 1900, in the prime of life at 42.  Four sons; James H., Harry E., and Grant L. of this community and Jeurel L., of Greensburg, Pennsylvania and four daughter; Mrs. Anna J., Lynn and Mrs. Ruth E. Baker and Misses Nell M., and Clara E., together with his aged helpmate who for nearly sixty-four years, shared intimately his joys and sorrows, survive him, to mourn indeed, their loss; but still to rejoice in his eternal gain.

His children's children number thirty-two, twenty-five of them here, while seven met him over there.  The third generation of descendants, number nine, three with him and six, to follow on.

Mr.. Magner never revisited the spot of his birth since coming to Indiana, although he had several times gone to Kentucky.

He united with the Presbyterian church of Orleans on certificate, from some other church, January 5, 1849.  He was at the time of his death and had been for several years the ranking member of his church and his mantel now falls upon the companion of all his mature years, for Mr. Magner was married before he was 20 and his bride not yet 17.

Mr.. Magner was chosen by the congregation of the Orleans Church as a ruling elder, and was ordained into that office, March 30, 1900, he asked the privilege of resigning his duties in that relation, September 6, 1908 and his request was granted; this, relieved him from active service as a member of the session, but of course did not take from him, any of the privileges of the Eldership, so that under the rulings of the church, he has been an Elder for more than 14 years.

He held the position of Superintendent of Sunday School, both at Mt. Pleasant Church and at Magner School House for a number of years.

He passed from Labor to reward after leaving recent bright evidence of his acceptance with God, and an assurance that all was well with him on September 14, 1914.  Aged 83 years, six months and five days.

Mr.. Magner's funeral was conducted at the family home, two and one-half miles southeast of Orleans, his pastor officiating on Thursday, September 17, 1914 at 2:00 p.m. and a large concourse of friends, neighbors and acquaintances followed the remains to Orleans, where the dust was interred in the family lot, in the old cemetery.

The intense suffering of the last few months, had thoroughly aroused the sympathy of the whole community not only for Mr. Magner, but for the good and faithful wife and children, who were compelled to witness the intense agony, without being able in any effective way mitigate the distress.

Edward Magner, Wife: Jane Erma (Brown) Magner Obituary

Mrs. Jane Magner, one of the oldest citizens of this county, died quite suddenly on Friday morning, May 11th of pleurisy and heart disease.

She was the daughter of Archibald Brown and was born about forty miles from Charleston, South Carolina, October 17, 1796 and moved with her parents to Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1803.

She married Edward Magner September 20, 1821 and settled in Orange County, Indiana in 1833, where she resided until her death, at the age of 81 years, six months and twenty-four days.

She united with the Concord Presbyterian Church in Kentucky in 1807, at the early age of 11 years.  She and her husband united with the Presbyterian Church at Orleans, November 1833, where she retained her membership until her death, thus making a total period of church membership of over seventy years.  Truly we may say of her "Thou shalt come to thy grave in full age, like as a shock or corn cometh in his season."

Her family consists of seven children, twenty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, some of whom, together with her husband, have preceded her to the spirit land.

Her funeral took place from the Presbyterian Church in Orleans, and her remains were laid in the old family cemetery on the farm now owned by Mr. William Magner, Sr.

EDWARD MAGNER - My Paternal 3x Great-Grandfather

Edward Magner was born on July 4, 1798 in Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky.  His parents were John H. and Mary Margaret Magner.  Edward was the third of their eight children.

Edward died on September 14, 1865 in Orleans, Orange County, Indiana at the age of 67.  He was laid to rest in the Magner Cemetery in Orleans, Orange County, Indiana.

Edward's father, John Magner was born 1762 in Washington County, Pennsylvania.  He served in the Pennsylvania Ranger for the Frontier.  Patented land in Union Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, 400 acres.  John died 1823 in Nicholas County Kentucky.

Edward's mother, Mary Margaret (maiden name unknown) was born 1767 in Washington County, Pennsylvania.  She died on March 22, 1841 in Fugit Township, Decatur, Indiana.

Edward Magner's, wife, Erma "Jane" Brown and Jane's Parents:

Erma Jane Brown was born October 17, 1796 in York, South Carolina. Her parents were Jane Farris and Archibald Brown.  Jane was one of 14 children.

Edward and Jane were wed on September 15, 1821 in Bourbon County Kentucky.  Jane's brother, Milton Brown was a witness of their marriage.  Their union was blessed with seven children; five sons and two daughters.

Jane (Brown) Magner died on May 11, 1877 in Orleans, Orange County, Indiana at the age of 80.  She was buried in the Magner Cemetery in Orleans, Orange County, Indiana.

Jane's father, Archibald was born March 31, 1769 in Ireland to Mary Margarett and Archibald Magner.  In 1790, Archibald married Jane Farris in Northern Ireland.  Archibald died at the age of 93 on November 15, 1862 in Nicholas, Kentucky.

Jane's mother, Miss Jane Farris was also born in Ireland.  Her birth date is March 10, 1772.  She died on June 16, 1844 at the age of 72 in Concord, Kentucky.  She is buried at the Old Concord Church Cemetery, Nicholas, Kentucky.

My maiden name is MAGNER.  The Irish form of the name is Maingneir.  Over the years, the surname went through several different spellings such as Magnel and Magnier, but by the 16th century it was spelled Magner as it is today.

The CastleMagner below was built in the 12th and 13th centuries.  The star turret still stands near an abandoned farmyard.  In March 2010 while visiting my brother Richard Magner and his wife in Ireland, I was able to see my family's castle or what is left of it in person.  CastleMagner is located some 35 miles northwest of the city of Cork.
