School terms were five to six months and teacher salary ranged from $25 to $40.  While Jesse was courting Nora HUGHES, he had a nice buggy and fast horses.  They married after 18 months of courtship and lived with his parents for three years.  Nora HUGHES was a 21-year-old bride and Jesse was 24 years old.  Jesse and Nora moved to their home then added rooms as their family grew.  Two carpenters walked the 4 1/2 miles from Galesburg, Kansas to work for two dollars a day.  When the children were small Jesse and a neighbor Ross Zugmire started a Sunday School at Sapp School House and occasionally a preacher would hold services.  Jesse farmed until his death at age 82.
