28th Annual Galesburg Days
Galesburg, Kansas - Neosho County
One of the gifts or surprises of working on family genealogy is that you get to meet relatives that you have never met before. In October 2016, I met Lucille (Simmons) Janssen by telephone. She was so kind to help me gain information about some of my Magner Ancestors. We emailed back and forth for one year and then finally met in person at the 2017 Galesburg Days Event.

Wife of Albert Lanville Magner, Jennie Doris Gager
Thank you for a Mother - Grandmother - Great Grandmother that was so loving and who was loved by all her family.
Thank you for a Mom that instilled self worth; self esteem in each of us that we could face the world and life with confidence and feel good about ourselves in any circumstance or situation.
Thank you for a Mom that showed us how to love one another; have respect for those around us.
Thank you for a Mom with a good sense of humor - (joke she would tell about a little bird that flew into a store) - she used to laugh so hard she sometimes couldn't finish.
Thank you for a Mom that brought God into each of our lives.
Mom loved Life - she loved her family most of all. She was proud of each little achievement we had though sometimes our accomplishment was so small it didn't really rate rave reviews.
I could go on for much longer, but in short what I am saying is - we thank you God for Mom and for the many blessings you have given us through Mom and her long life.
Thank you.

Thank you Richard for allowing me to post your thoughts when you were just 15 years old when our grandfather died. I think it was beautifully written.
Note: I found these pages and more in one of my mother's scrapbooks while I was home in September. Priceless!

Jennie (Gager) Magner's words from the booklet, Many Memories Jennie --
I was married July 7, 1923. Everyone kept asking when are you to be married? I think you're already married, so Albert and I thought we had the name, so might as well do it. We went to Girard saying we were looking for furniture. We were married and afterwards went to a small café across from the courthouse and had watermelon to celebrate the event. When we returned home, he went to his parent's home and me to mine. His parents and younger sister Mildred were to move into Galesburg as soon as the house they had bought was ready to live in.
After we had been married a month or so Albert's mother found the marriage license in his overcoat pocket. Horrors - "Did you have to marry?" I think it was a big disappointment to a lot of people in the neighborhood that it wasn't so. Ha!

Jennie (Gager) Magner's own words from the booklet, "Many Memories"
I graduated in 1921 and while attending a basketball game with Eva (my sister) and her date, Wes Holstein, Gladys Hughes and Bill Beach, I had a blind date with Albert Magner, my future husband. Note: Jennie and Albert lived just seven miles from each other
I signed a contract to teach at a country school, Shiloh about six miles from home. I went to Teachers College at Emporia Kansas for two months, June and July. Received a teacher's certificate for one year. I borrowed $100.00 from Thayer Kansas State Bank to pay for board, room and books. Good old days.
Back to my first teaching job. I stayed home and drove Nellie, the slowest mare on earth to the school house. I repaid the loan at the bank in two months, also paid the board bill for Eva and Dorothy (her sisters) staying in Thayer, Kansas.
My Personal Note: Jennie taught school for two years before marrying Albert Magner. After she was married she was kept busy raising their six children, cultivating a vegetable garden and raising chickens, canning their homegrown food, sewing clothes and other chores.
**Jennie wrote "Many Memories" and her daughter Noretta typed and assembled the book.

Albert Lanville Magner
Albert Magner moved to the MAGNER Homestead when he was about two years old. After marrying Jennie GAGER, he purchased the 160 acre farm from his father, Samuel in July 1926. Albert farmed all his life and after his children had grown and were raising their own families, he drove a school bus for 19 years for the Galesburg School District.
In 1968, Albert suffered a stroke spending a short time in the hospital. The following year, 1969 Albert and Jennie made their last fishing trip to Colorado in their pick-up camper. They watched the July 20, 1969 first landing on the moon from a hotel that summer. Albert had surgery in 1971 for a bleeding ulcer. The stitches were removed after one week. The wound somehow split open so they taped the incision shut, but Albert went into shock and had a mini-stroke. He told his wife, Jennie it was his time to go and he passed a few weeks later on September 23, 1971 at a Parsons (Kansas) hospital.

LIFE
Life can be measured only in time.
We use not the rule to measure the first two score.
It comes and goes like the dawn til dusk.
Some are blessed with life for long,
Others short we know not Why.
The answer we will know
When life is over here on earth.

We were invited inside by the church secretary to hear the history and tour this beautiful church in downtown Cheyenne. Dr. Fred C. As a preacher he was scholarly and inspirational. Many people grew because of his nurture and care. As a pastor and friend he dispensed light and warmth. His religion was part of his living. In his friendships he was courageous and helpful and could always be depended upon. Fred Clark was so full of fun and good humor that it was a joy to be with him. He was truly a beautiful person.

MILDRED ANNA MAGNER CLARK (continued)
Mildred was active in church and community all of her life and made many friends wherever she lived. But it was as a mother where she distinguished herself with her absolute faithfulness in time and spirit to the needs of her two children -- Marilyn and Burnill. All through their childhood and school years she devoted herself to their welfare teaching the way of the Christian life by precept and example.
She knew disappointment and sorrow in life, having suffered from tuberculosis while the children were small. She spent fifteen months in the hospital before a cure for that dreaded disease was discovered and developed. Following Mildred's release from the hospital, she spent several years at home regaining her health. In 1948 the family moved to Wheat Ridge, Colorado so that Mildred could benefit from a better climate.
In 1954, Fred and Mildred moved their family to a pastorate in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This was followed by assignments in Greeley and Denver, Colorado.
They retired to the Seattle area in 1970 and bought a home in Lynnwood. Fred served as Minister of Visitation at Edmonds United Methodist Church. In 1980 Mildred and Fred moved to the Hearthstone Retirement Home on Greenlake. Following Fred's death in 1982, Mildred continued to live at the Hearthstone until 1995. She spent her final years in Edmonds Rehabilitation and the Morning Glory Adult Family Home.
A BIG thank you!

MILDRED ANNA MAGNER CLARK
February 19, 1908 - May 20, 2000
Mildred Anna Magner was born February 19, 1908 on a farm near Galesburg, Kansas. This was her address for the next fourteen years. Her parents then moved to another farm just outside the city limits of the small town of Galesburg, which Mildred considered to be her home until she and Fred C. Clark were married in 1933.
Mildred was graduated from Galesburg High School. Following two years of college she received a life certificate to teach in the Kansas Elementary Schools, where she taught for seven years prior to her marriage.
She was the youngest of four children of Sam and Etta Magner. Mildred had two brothers -- Ralph and Albert Magner -- both of whom preceded her in death. Both brothers died after reaching retirement age and she felt their loss keenly.
Her sister, Audlene, also preceded her in death. She felt very close to Audlene and lived with her and her husband, D.G. Springer for four years. This was done to provide Mildred access to a better school for the seventh and eighth grades, and the opportunity of attending the first two years of high school in Galesburg. Living with her sister gave Mildred the advantage of a nine-month urban school, compared with the eight-month rural school year.
Mildred and Fred were married on Christmas Eve, 1933 in Galesburg. Much of their married life was spent serving Methodist churches in Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Washington. She was baptized into the Christian Church as a young girl, so Mildred early was led to make her commitment to Christ and the Church.
