MILDRED ANNA MAGNER CLARK
February 19, 1908 - May 20, 2000
Mildred Anna Magner was born February 19, 1908 on a farm near Galesburg, Kansas. This was her address for the next fourteen years. Her parents then moved to another farm just outside the city limits of the small town of Galesburg, which Mildred considered to be her home until she and Fred C. Clark were married in 1933.
Mildred was graduated from Galesburg High School. Following two years of college she received a life certificate to teach in the Kansas Elementary Schools, where she taught for seven years prior to her marriage.
She was the youngest of four children of Sam and Etta Magner. Mildred had two brothers -- Ralph and Albert Magner -- both of whom preceded her in death. Both brothers died after reaching retirement age and she felt their loss keenly.
Her sister, Audlene, also preceded her in death. She felt very close to Audlene and lived with her and her husband, D.G. Springer for four years. This was done to provide Mildred access to a better school for the seventh and eighth grades, and the opportunity of attending the first two years of high school in Galesburg. Living with her sister gave Mildred the advantage of a nine-month urban school, compared with the eight-month rural school year.
Mildred and Fred were married on Christmas Eve, 1933 in Galesburg. Much of their married life was spent serving Methodist churches in Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Washington. She was baptized into the Christian Church as a young girl, so Mildred early was led to make her commitment to Christ and the Church.
