Fred Charles Clark was born July 7, 1905 in St. Paul, Kansas.  He graduated from high school in Erie, Kansas and received his A.B. Degree in 1935 from Kansas State Teacher's College in Pittsburg, Kansas.  Reverend Clark received the Master of Theology Degree in 1938, from The Iliff School of Theology.  In 1950 he earned the degree of Doctor of Theology from Iliff in Denver, Colorado.

From 1970 to 1975 Doctor Clark served as Minister of Visitation for the Edmonds United Methodist Church.  Since moving to the Hearthstone Retirement Home in July 1981, Sand Point has been Fred and Mildred's church home.

Fred was the son of Charlie and Winifred Clark.  He was the second of five children.  His sister Cleora Neely makes her home in Chapman, Kansas.  Fred has two brothers who are retired Methodist ministers: Doctor Alva Clark, living in Omaha, Nebraska; and Reverend Leonard Clark who resides in Thayer, Kansas.  His brother Lloyd Clark is deceased.

The Sand Point United Methodist Church Bulletin
Fred Charles Clark was born July 7, 1905 in St. Paul, Kansas and spent his childhood in Erie, Kansas, where he graduated from high school.  On Christmas Day in 1933, he and Mildred Anna Magner were married.   [Correction, they were married on Christmas Eve in 1933]

In 1935 he received his A.B. degree from Kansas State Teacher's College; in 1938 he received his Master of Theology degree from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado.

Fred Clark served Methodist churches in Kansas, Colorado and Cheyenne, Wyoming before becoming District Superintendent of the Greeley, Colorado District in 1961. In 1966 Doctor Clark became Director of Field Education for the Iliff School of Theology.  During his forty-three years in the active ministry, he served on numerous boards and agencies.

He was a Thirty-Second Degree Mason and a Rotarian.  Upon retirement from the Rocky Mountain Conference in 1970, the Clarks moved to Lynnwood, Washington.  From 1970 to 1975 Fred served as Minister of Visitation for the Edmonds United Methodist Church.  Since moving to the Hearthstone Retirement Home in July, 1981, Sand Point was Fred and Mildred's church home.

Fred is survived by his wife, Mildred; two children, Marilyn Clark Kraft and Burnill Fred Clark; and five grandchildren.  He is also survived by a sister, Cleora Neely and two brothers, Dr. Alva Clark and the Reverend Leonard Clark, both retired Methodist clergymen.

Fred Clark was a loving, caring husband, father and friend.  Because the health of his wife was always frail, Fred helped in many ways that made him exceptionally close to his wife and children.  As a preacher he was scholarly and inspirational.  Many people grew because of his nurture and care.  As a pastor and friend he dispensed light and warmth.  His religion was part of his living.  In his friendships he was courageous and helpful and could always be depended upon.  Fred Clark was so full of fun and good humor that it was a joy to be with him.  He was truly a beautiful person.

MILDRED ANNA MAGNER CLARK   (continued)

Mildred was active in church and community all of her life and made many friends wherever she lived.  But it was as a mother where she distinguished herself with her absolute faithfulness in time and spirit to the needs of her two children -- Marilyn and Burnill.  All through their childhood and school years she devoted herself to their welfare teaching the way of the Christian life by precept and example.

She knew disappointment and sorrow in life, having suffered from tuberculosis while the children were small.  She spent fifteen months in the hospital before a cure for that dreaded disease was discovered and developed.  Following Mildred's release from the hospital, she spent several years at home regaining her health.  In 1948 the family moved to Wheat Ridge, Colorado so that Mildred could benefit from a better climate.

In 1954, Fred and Mildred moved their family to a pastorate in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  This was followed by assignments in Greeley and Denver, Colorado.

They retired to the Seattle area in 1970 and bought a home in Lynnwood.  Fred served as Minister of Visitation at Edmonds United Methodist Church.  In 1980 Mildred and Fred moved to the Hearthstone Retirement Home on Greenlake.  Following Fred's death in 1982, Mildred continued to live at the Hearthstone until 1995.  She spent her final years in Edmonds Rehabilitation and the Morning Glory Adult Family Home.

A BIG thank you!

                             MILDRED ANNA MAGNER CLARK

                              February 19, 1908 - May 20, 2000

Mildred Anna Magner was born February 19, 1908 on a farm near Galesburg, Kansas.  This was her address for the next fourteen years.  Her parents then moved to another farm just outside the city limits of the small town of Galesburg, which Mildred considered to be her home until she and Fred C. Clark were married in 1933.

Mildred was graduated from Galesburg High School.  Following two years of college she received a life certificate to teach in the Kansas Elementary Schools, where she taught for seven years prior to her marriage.

She was the youngest of four children of Sam and Etta Magner.  Mildred had two brothers -- Ralph and Albert Magner -- both of whom preceded her in death.  Both brothers died after reaching retirement age and she felt their loss keenly.

Her sister, Audlene, also preceded her in death.  She felt very close to Audlene and lived with her and her husband, D.G. Springer for four years.  This was done to provide Mildred access to a better school for the seventh and eighth grades, and the opportunity of attending the first two years of high school in Galesburg.  Living with her sister gave Mildred the advantage of a nine-month urban school, compared with the eight-month rural school year.

Mildred and Fred were married on Christmas Eve, 1933 in Galesburg.  Much of their married life was spent serving Methodist churches in Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Washington.  She was baptized into the Christian Church as a young girl, so Mildred early was led to make her commitment to Christ and the Church.

I do not have a birth certificate for Albert Lanville Magner so I cannot properly address the debate about his actual name.  Was it Albert Lanville or Lanville Albert Magner?  Earlier signatures at bank and on farm deeds were L.A. Magner, but in later years he changed to Albert L. Magner.

Albert Lanville Magner is my grandfather and has his own Label on the Blog.  As I continue to post you will find Albert's life story along with his wife and children. Stay tuned.

Age 89

My dad's cousin, Burnill Clark gave me contact information about Neola in 2011.  We shared some emails after I asked her about memories she had about growing up in Galesburg.

July 26, 2011 - I do not remember a lot about my Grandfather, Samuel Magner, but one distinct memory I have is when he would bring my Grandmother Etta Mae Magner to our country farm house.  He was always very impatient when he would come back to pick her up.  Usually he would go each morning to Uncle Albert's house just down the road from us as it had been his farm and would drop off Grandmother at our house.  He would return each afternoon and take her home. When he returned and got just south of our house, he would start honking and she was to be at the mailbox when he got there.

I have more memories of Aunt Jennie, Uncle Albert's wife. She and Uncle Albert lived on a farm about 2 miles west of us, back towards Galesburg.  I remember Jennie as a very happy person.

I also have memories of my cousin- your Aunt Luretta.  Luretta would ride a horse to our house and then ride to school with us in the car. She was just a little older than me I think. Sometimes we would ride the pony and sometimes our bikes, but usually Dad took us.

Another memory I have about being in school was driving our Model-T car to the school festival in Erie, Kansas. It was fairly warm so Mother and I left our new spring coats in the car. We went to the carnival and came back and someone had stolen our coats. This was probably in the late 1930s and it was often that cars were stolen and stripped for parts.

My favorite memory of the festival was winding the May Pole. I don't think we ever won but it was always great fun to learn how to do it just so.

Daughter: Adalyn Elvina Magner husband, Ludwig Patrick Indihar Obituary

In Memory of Ludwig Patrick Indihar    October 14, 1923 - November 13, 2017
Ludwig Patrick Indihar passed away peacefully at the age of 94 in his home he built in the Milpitas foothills, on Monday, November 13, 2017.  A resident of Milpitas since 1958, Ludwig was one of three children born in Cherokee County, Kansas, raised by immigrant parents, Antone J. "Tony" and Pauline (Dernovish) Indihar on a farm.

Ludwig joined the United States Army on December 23, 1943 at Leavenworth, Kansas and was honorably discharged on November 4, 1945.

While working at Boeing after World War II, he met and married the love of his life for 72 years, Adalyn Elvina Magner.  Their union would bring them a full family and loads of adventure.

Ludwig graduated from Kansas University (Lawrence, Kansas) in 1949, with a Mechanical Engineering Degree and the Indihar family set out for Poughkeepsie, New York as Ludwig took a job with IBM.  Then in 1955, they relocated to Livermore, California where Ludwig took a job with the Livermore Lab.  In 1958, the family set their permanent roots in the new town of Milpitas, California when Ludwig was hired by Lockheed and eventually retired 25 years later.

Ludwig "Lud" loved square dancing with Adalyn, "Ad" traveling all over the country as a private pilot, volunteering with the church, car clubs and lots of family adventures.

Among his many achievements and accomplishments, he notes his greatest, is the building of the family home in the Milpitas hillside, as he also used his mechanical design knowledge to draft the design for the home.  Adalyn still resides there today!

Tom Brokaw in his book, "The Greatest Generation" describes Ludwig Indihar..."They came of age during the Great Depression and the Second World War and went on to build modern America - men and women whose everyday lives of duty, honor, achievement and courage gave us the world we have today."

"My Favorite Person in the Pedigree Chart"
By Adalyn Indihar --- January 23, 1997

Some years ago, I asked my mother to tell me about my paternal great grandmother, Elvina Fritz Boje.  Indeed I am most grateful to my mother as she described the life of Elvina Boje which I had written down to treasure in my memories.
Elvina Fritz, was born in Prussia, June 1st, 1848 and came to America in 1857 with her parents to settle in Ottawa, Illinois.  She was married to Christopher Boje in 1863 and started westward to Kansas in 1869.  On the trip westward, the grass was tall and the trails were rough.  She related the dishes were packed in boxes and put on the bed during the day's travel.  They crossed rutted trails throwing the boxes to the floor of the wagon and thus a shattered dream of dishes for their new home.
They homesteaded and lived in a sod house in Galesburg, Kansas.  She told of the Indians coming peacefully to water their horses at a spring close to their home.  Great Grandma Boje would tell of how strong the wind would blow across the open plains.  The doors on their leather hinges would creak and the windows would shake.  When Great-Grandpa Boje was working the ground to plan corn, she would take her small children and sit on the woodpile to quiet their fears.
In their marriage, they had the following children: Minnie (who died in infancy), Will, Etta, Iona, Mollie and Henry.
Great Grandpa Boje passes away at the age of 42 years leaving her with five young children to rear, which she did in the traditional early days of hard work and devotion to her children.
I remember her always having some kind of hand work in her hands such as piecing and quilting quilts, embroidery and crocheting.
She passed away on Thursday morning at 2:15 o'clock, December 29, 1938 after one day of illness.
She was a member of the Galesburg Christian Church and was buried from there.  Burial is in Mount Hope Cemetery in Galesburg, Kansas.
My mother must have admired my paternal Great Grandmother Boje very much as she gave me the middle name of Elvina.

Thank you, Adalyn for allowing me to share this loving article.
