Jerald Brooke Magner 1922-2006

      Jerald Brooke Magner, 84 of Chanute and former rural Galesburg resident, died at 7:30 p.m. Monday, September 25, 2006, at the Pittsburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.
      He was born on September 3, 1922, at Galesburg to Ralph and Dica (Brooke) Magner.  He grew up and attended schools at Galesburg.  He served in the United States Navy as a Machinists Mate First Class from 1942 to 1946 during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.  He earned the Good Conduct and Victory Medals.
      He and LaVonne Gibbs were united in marriage on January 20, 1948, at Iola.  She survives of the home.  He owned and operated a gas station from 1946 to 1951 at Neosho Falls.  They moved to rural Galesburg where he operated a farm from 1951 to 1986.  They also had a dairy operation during that time.  He and his wife managed a motel in Branson (Missouri) from 1987 until his retirement in 1998.  He has resided in Chanute since that time.
      He was a member of the Galesburg Christian Church and the George L. Hendricks Post. No. 102 American Legion of Erie.  He was chairman of the Neosho County Rural Water District No. 4 for four years.  He also served on the CUSD 101 School District Board.  He enjoyed hunting, gardening, but most of all his grandchildren.
      Survivors include two sons; Galen Magner and his wife, Judy of Erie; Leon Magner of Greenville, Texas; one daughter, Leita Thurman and her husband, Mick of Erie; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Corenne Simmons, Erie; Adalyn Indihar, Milpitas, California and Ann Mudd of Chanute, Kansas.
      He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cleita Magner, May 6, 1976.
      Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 28, 2006, at the Mt. Hope Cemetery with military honors conducted by the George L. Hendricks Post No. 102 American Legion of Erie.  Friends may call the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home at their convenience.  Memorials are suggested to the George L. Hendricks Post. 102 American Legion of Erie and these may be left at or mailed to the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, PO Box 182, 303 N. Grant Street, Erie, Kansas 66733.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Parsons.
